Our bodies naturally detoxify everyday as part of a normal bodily process. Detoxification is one of the body’s most basic automatic functions of eliminating and neutralising toxins through the organs of elimination; namely: the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin.

Life in the 21st Century is full of stress and environmental toxicity.  We have over a hundred thousand toxic chemicals in our surrounding environment that interact with our cell biology on a daily basis.  These toxins make their way into our bodies via the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe and the environment we live and work within. Our chemicalised diets, containing an abundance of processed foods, vegetable oils, trans fats, non-organic foods, caffeine and alcohol radically changes our internal ecosystem. Toxin build-up in the body  is scientifically proven to accelerate premature aging leading to dull, lifeless, wrinkled and pigmented skin.

One of the most positive outcomes of detoxifying the system, is to cleanse the digestive system of impacted food that can be many years old. This will have a profound effect on the health of both your body and mind – stopping the destructive cycle of toxins that cannot be expelled being re-absorbed into the body, where they cause a cascade of free radical damage and cell oxidization. Our digestive system is our second brain, science has proven that we can think and feel with our gut, and as such it requires special care.

To detox daily, you need to pursue an anti-inflammatory diet that is low in sugar and starch and high in antioxidant rich vegetables and herbs. Energy should come from GOOD SATURATED FATS such as raw dairy, coconut and avocadoes, nuts, seeds and cold pressed oils. Protein should come from a clean source from organic, grass fed sources and line caught non-farmed fish. 

Here are my top tips to maintain a cleansed, healthy digestive system, every day: 

 

Apples & Apple Cider Vinegar: This simple fruit is a powerful colon cleansing food. Rich in natural fiber, this promotes healthy digestion. Apples are also rich in pectin, a carbohydrate compound that acts as a thickening agent inside the gut. When taken in therapeutic doses, pectin can help root out built-up toxins (including heavy metals) in the colon and strengthen the intestinal lining. I recommend a 20ml shot of Apple Cider Vinegar a day and use apples liberally for juicing. 

 

Avocados. For everyday colon cleansing, avocados significantly aid detoxification and digestion. Like apples, avocados are rich in fiber, and include both soluble and insoluble fiber at a ratio of about one to three, which is unique. Insoluble fiber promotes healthy bowel movements and cleanses the colon. Soluble fiber absorbs water and binds with other digested substances, to help them move effortlessly through the digestive tract. This “gelling” effect helps maintain bowel regularity: preventing the toxic buildup that causes bloating, discomfort, irregularity and constipation.

 

Flax and Chai Seeds: Both seeds possess unique nutrient profiles – containing fats and fiber that help stimulate healthy digestion and the expulsion of toxins from the colon. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which stabilise cell walls and reduce inflammation. High levels of soluble fiber bind with food to optimise the digestive process, keeping you regular.

 

Chlorophyll-rich Greens: Green fruits and vegetables are rich in chlorophyll, to promote healthy digestion and daily colon cleansing. Select Kale, Spinach, Green olives, Asparagus, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Celery, Collard greens, Sea vegetables, Leeks, Peas, Wheatgrass and Swiss chard are all high in chlorophyll, which means they can help cleanse your digestive tract and detoxify your liver. ZEOLITES: are a naturally forming micropourous, aluminosilicate mineral combination, found in ancient rock deposits around the world.  Zeolites have a very strong affinity for pulling out toxic debris from water, clothing and within the body making them nature’s finest detoxifying elements.  

Zeolites are unique groupings of minerals with a 4-sided honeycomb structure and a negative magnetic charge.  This distinctive structure allows zeolites to capture and remove positively charged heavy metals, environmental toxins and free radicals from the body.   

Zeolites are effective at adsorbing heavy metals such as mercury, lead, aluminum, cadmium and arsenic.  These heavy metals are highly toxic and create massive free radical stress in the brain, liver, kidneys and gut – removing heavy metals is absolutely essential for optimal health.

Zeolites possess unique antioxidant capabilities. Most antioxidants act by donating an electron to neutralise a free radical.  However, zeolite neutralizes free radicals by trapping them in its complex structure, effectively inactivating and eliminating them.  Zeolites also trap microbes such as pathogenic bacteria, viruses, yeasts and grabs hold of xenoestrogenic molecules from plastics, pesticides & herbicides.

Pure Water: A hydrated colon is a healthy colon. Water is a universal solvent, carrying nutrients to every cell in our bodies and flushing away toxins and impurities. The issue we face with water is its purity; with over 200 chemicals found in a baby’s umbilical cord, one can only estimate the chemical composition of modern day tap water. In order to drink pure water, choose spring water sold in glass to avoid the petrochemical toxins that leach out of plastic containers into the water. 

 

The human body expels between 1.7 litres and 2.3 litres of water per day. Simply breathing expels between two and four cups of water from your body each day, increasing during exercise. Depending on your level of activity, you will expel another two to four cups via perspiration and in excess of 1.5 litres when you go to the bathroom. Aim for 2 litres and this quota can include juiced vegetables and herbal tea, but does not include caffeinated drinks as they leach water and mineral reserves from the body. 

 

This water loss must be replaced, or the body will draw on its own water reserves. When the body is forced to draw on its reserves, it leaves our skin lifeless, our energy depleted and our cells desperate for additional hydration.

 

CHLORELLA: The single celled green algae known as  Chlorella Vulgaris is renowned for its incredible nutrient profile, including trace minerals, chlorophyll, and anti-oxidant phytonutrtients. It also contains many very unique elements such as the carotenoid Sporopollein and the plant based antibiotic Chlorellan. Chlorella is used around the world as a valuable food source for immune boosting and detoxification – add 2 teaspoons daily it to juices and smoothies. 

Chlorella is the most potent source of pure chlorophyll.  Chlorophyll helps purify the blood and allows the body to utilize oxygen more efficiently.  It also supports the elimination of many toxins such as molds and industrial pollutants.   Chlorophyll provides high levels of magnesium to help support the brain and nervous system and to protect against toxic accumulation in the central nervous system.

Sporopollein is more effective at binding neurotoxic debris better than any other natural substance on earth.  It has the ability to detox the body from Biotoxins such asTtuberculosis, Lyme disease, Tetanus toxins and Mould.  It also filters out Xenobiotics such as Phyltates, Dioxins, Pesticides and Industrial waste.   It can bind and eliminate heavy metals like Mercury, Lead, Nickel and Aluminum.  It also pulls out food Preservatives, Flavourings, Additives and Colourings.

Chlorella is a highly absorptive material and should be only stored in glass or paper packaging as it absorbs the toxins present in plastic. 

Corriander: Excellent for detoxing mercury, which has permeated our environment to the point where it even resides permanently in our teeth as amalgam fillings. Raw organic cilantro can be chopped up and sprinkled on almost any food serving. It can be juiced along with Carrots, Beetroot, Cucumber and Apples and added to green smoothies. 

 

 

Fermented Foods: The human digestive system is composed of a vast network of beneficial microbiota that digest food, absorb nutrients, thwart harmful bacteria, and eliminate toxins. Absorbing chemicals in any form will damage this delicate gut flora and reduce the ability of the gut to digest food, draw nutrients from it, and expel it. You can offset this damage by supplementing with probiotics and eat plenty of fermented, probiotic-rich foods. These include cultured vegetables like kimchi, and fermented beverages like kombucha tea and kefir.

 

FASTNG: Cycles of intermittent fasting with decent fluid intake for periods of 12-18 hours daily are highly beneficial for eliminating the majority of toxins consumed that day.

Periodic cleansing periods where solid food is eliminated for periods of 24-72 hours are highly recommended.  Try juicing for 24 hours, once a week and on that day only consume liquids in the form of juiced fruit and vegetables, coconut water and raw milk. Even one day a week will lead to a substantial improvement in your health and wellbeing. 

COCONUT OIL: Pure, virgin coconut oil applied to the skin topically, means that beneficial elements are absorbed through the skin and directly into the bloodstream to be carried around the body, enhancing the detoxification process. Coconut oil feeds the immune system and helps provide medium-chain triglycerides that destroy parasitic microorganisms.  It also helps to provide a clean energy source for the brain and reduces cellular inflammation.

A CAUTIONARY NOTE: THE HEALING CRISIS

Although the end result of detoxing can be incredible health, vitality and energy, the process itself can (but not always) produce unpleasant side effects due to the exiting of toxic waste and impurities. Some of these impurities enjoy your body’s ecology and they do not want to leave. As a result you can feel under the weather and worse than before you started the detox. This is why I advocate the daily detox protocol, of cleansing little by little, rather than shocking your system by doing an intense period of detoxing. Incorporating cleansing elements into your diet and lifestyle will be more manageable in this time and energy poor society we live in. 

The most effective way to reduce the side effects of detoxing is to stay hydrated, the more pure water you drink, the faster your body can eliminate impurities. Fresh juices, green tea, or plain, filtered water should become your best friends.

Rest is also crucial; While detoxing, be sure to get plenty of rest and to not over-exert yourself. As your body is adjusting to the change, it’s not the time to be running all over the place, engaging in strenuous activity, or raising your blood pressure. Take the time to cleanse your mind using meditation techniques or just being still. 

DAILY DETOX SMOOTHIE

  • 1 cup COCONUT WATER (I recommend Jax Coco)
  • ½ cup ORANGE JUICE
  • ½ cup HEMP SEED POWDER
  • 2 tablespoons SPIRULINA
  • handful of GOJI BERRIES
  • ½ an AVOCADO
  • handful of RAW CHOCOLATE/CAOA NIBS
  • Pinch of cinnamon and vanilla powder
  • Optional: 2 tabelspoons ZEOLITES
  • ½ cup of pure water/ice

Put all the ingredients into a blender and blend at low speed for 5 seconds and then gradually build up to high speed for 90 seconds.
