To mark the opening, Village Ways will offer an exclusive Welcoming Khal Jhuni break during the months of March and April with a special focus on the village. Be among the first guests at the Khal Jhuni guesthouse, meet the community, learn about the local craft of ringal weaving and witness the blessing of the guesthouse.

With a fine mix of walking, accompanied by a local guide, and rest days, this charming new holiday gives a wonderful introduction to life in the Saryu Valley. Over 11 days, guests will immerse themselves in the rhythm of village life and gain a true understanding of the traditions of these remote rural communities, but most importantly, by visiting and staying here, guests will help bring a much needed economic boost to the communities.

The adventure begins amongst the hustle and bustle of Delhi, where guests spend their first afternoon exploring the city, before a train journey north and a drive deep into the Kumoan hills brings guests to the peaceful mountain resort of Khali. After a relaxing overnight here, and a further passage which ends with a fine two hour walk, guests arrive in the tranquil, but awe-inspiring Saryu Valley, at the village of Supi. The next day brings Khal Jhuni, where the villagers are eager to welcome guests. Spend three days watching as village life unfolds, explore the surrounding hills on local short walks, enjoy a riverside picnic, discover the herb plantations at Shahastradhara, visit the neighbouring village of Jhuni, and observe (and have a go at) basket weaving.

After waving farewell to Khal Jhuni, a walk across the meadows leads to Jakuni Bhugial, where the communities have established a comfortable tented camp at 3,000m. Enjoying balcony views of the high Himalayan peaks, which feel almost within touching distance, guests spend a night under the stars here, before beginning their homeward journey, via Supi and the pretty lakeside hill-station resort of Nainital.

Price: the 10-night Welcoming Khal Jhuni holiday costs from £918 per person based on two sharing, including one night in Delhi, one night at the Khali Estate, two nights in Supi, three nights in Khal Jhuni, one night in the tented camp, one night in Nainital, most meals (full board in the villages), return rail journeys on the Ranikhet Express (one overnight) to and from Delhi, transfers, guiding and porterage with Village Ways (, 01223 750049).
