NUTRITION SERIES: FATS ARE THE NEW THIN

Animal and other natural saturated fats from whole plant foods are naturally beneficial for our bodies, brains and our waistlines – they are nutrient dense meaning you get a lot of nutrients per calorie. For millennia we have eaten saturated fats as the basis of a nutritious and nutrient rich diet.
I was prompted to write this article, after recently meeting with the Food Standards agency, as part of a consumer committee consisting of health professionals. We presented our individual cases as to why we believe passionately in the provenance of raw milk as a nutrient dense superfood.

We've all heard of monosodium glutamate, but what is it? Glutamic acid and its ions and salts are known collectively as glutamates. They are flavour enhancingcompounds providing an umami (savoury) taste to food. The sodium salt of glutamic acid, monosodium glutamate (MSG), is an additive that’s widely used by foodmanufacturers to activate and excite our taste buds. In my last article, we discussed how sugar, and not fat, makes you gain weight. Sugar makes you fat because, as a refined form of carbohydrate, it rapidly raises blood sugar levels affecting insulin production and increasing the rate at which the body lays down extra fat cells. This article discusses the alternatives to sugar, and why some of those are even more destructive to the body than sugar.

We all need a minimum of 15 minutes of sunlight on bare skin every day, to maintain optimal levels of health and wellbeing.

Those close to me know that I have an inherent issue with authority. Woven into this, is the fact that I have exceptionally high standards and expectations of others and myself. As a result, I rarely experience admiration and respect concurrently. Dr Deepa Apte is a unique lady, who vibrates on a different level and exudes youth and vitality – and who I connected with and respected instantly.
