I love my spicy food. I grew up on it you see as my parents just love a good Indian meal, and they like it pretty darn hot! So I have grown accustomed to food with lots of flavour. But, I recently found out something a bit scary - and it is linked directly to curry spices. My doctor first warned me about herbs and spices that are non organic. He said, anything that is grown in certain countries that is not organic is likely to be heavily toxic, sprayed with the most dangerous chemicals and heavy metals.
Recently, I began reading about this subject in greater detail. Many years ago, a very toxic chemical (used as an insesticide) was heavily used in our environment. It was called 'DDT". It was literally sprayed everywhere and back then, it was thought of as safe. Even the men who sprayed it around the streets didn't even wear any cover ups. This stuff was also used in a body powder and even small children were told that they could have it rubbed over their bodies. The effects of DDT, were said to mimic that of polio, so victims had paralysis and other nasty polio symptoms.
Because of this, DDT ended up being banned in the USA in the late 70's and over in the UK it was banned in 1984. One of the many problems of DDT is that even when its not in use anymore, it is still in our atmosphere and our soil. And, it is showing up in the blood streams of animals, humans and even small babies. It is linked to cancer and hormonal problems. Quite scary isn't it?
Ok, so you are thinking I am sure, where is she going with this? Well, DDT, is still in use in India (and Africa too) today and that is where the majority of spices come from. So, if you are not using organic spices, then chances are you are eating small amounts of DDT every time you have a curry. And that to me, is alarmingly worrying.
And on another shocking yet important piece of information is to ask the question why do countries like India and Africa still use this dangerous DDT? Well, some are saying that its because when Western countries ban a toxic substance such as DDT, the poorer countries become a dumping ground for these pesticides. It's not good enough for us, yet good enough for them?? Disgraceful isnt it? It's banned over here, yet it's been shipped over to third world countries like India and Africa.
There are already enough toxins we face in our every day lives I am trying to spread the message about decreasing your limits as much as possible. And, at the end of the post there is some info about how you can remove toxins like these from your body.
So, I cannot recommend the buying and eating of organic spices enough, and to make your curries at home yourself. With Steenbergs Organic spices you won't even miss the local takeaway curry as these spices are just so good you will enjoy making them and so will whoever eats them!
I have never been someone who is naturally gifted with food, and to get a good curry just right usually takes some secret recipe passed down from generations which I have never been able to come across. So my home made curries were usually pretty bland. But I have got to say that the spices Steenbergs makes even my curries, out of this world! They have many individual spices to purchase or already blended organic spices such as korma, tandoori, rogan josh plus many more. I have been testing out their sample curry set and it's simply fantastic!
I made a complete curry meal with about 4 dishes plus some home made naan bread and it was just delicious. And, there was none of that heavy tummy feeling you get from most curries. Making your own meals from scratch truly is the way to go. Even making your own bread is wonderful as you don't need any preservatives and the bread wont make your stomach feel like a rock.
In this lovely curry set is 8 popular curry mixes such as:

The spices don't come with any recipes, but, you will be able to easily use a curry recipe book and just use a bit of common sense, to know how to put the dish together. If it calls for you to individually put the spices together then you won't need to do that. Chances are it will be just cook some onion, add the spices then add tomatoes or coconut milk or whatever the recipe calls for. These spices are wonderful to use as marinades for either meat if you eat it or veggies if you are vegetarian.
