Lets start by checking what Detox actually means?
Detox is a natural body response and part of our biology that occurs when we are in synch with the rhythms of nature. When we eat natural foods, seasonal fruits and vegetables we pack our bodies with very specific compounds that will help to detox and clean the body. And in fact, the body goes into this detox mode at night when we go to sleep. Detox means to remove the toxins that hinder the natural flow and balance in ones body. In ancient times it didn't matter so much whether we detoxed or not as it was naturally part of the way of life. All food was natural, the air was clean and the water was pure...Nothing that could obstruct the flow at the level which happens so much these days.
Where do the toxins come from?
Toxins should not be part of our world. They have come as a direct result of human disconnection from nature. We have been playing with its biology, endangering every species, including us, on the planet. The harmful elements created by humans goes from nuclear radiation, and harmful agriculture using pesticides and other pollutants. To the alteration and manipulation of foods and the so called industrialised world that pollutes the air and water. Not to mention the dangers of using common cosmetics, deodorants, shampoos, and many other conventional “body care” products that have a long list of toxins and heavy metals which accumulate in our bodies daily. Not a nice picture of the world we live in...is it?! Well, this is not to alarm you but to bring you some factual evidence of what toxins really are and what to do about it!
Where to Start?
Every human on this planet should detox once in a while. And that means to stop doing what we have been doing for the last few years and make a change, give our body a nice break.
For instance it is time to question first what are your goals? What would you like to achieve with a detox...? Improve your health, lose some weight, increase your energy, have more clarity, improve your skin...whatever that is, it is important for you to write it down. Make sure you have a clear picture of what do you want to achieve, and from there, start making some daily changes to support your goals. Use a vision board or a daily program and remind yourself every day what drives you , where do you want to go and which steps you will need to take.
11 EASY TIPS TO GET INTO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS PERMANENTLY (AND NOT TEMPORARILY)
1. Start the day with 3 glasses of water
One of the most purifying and detoxing daily practices is that of drinking two or three glasses of water upon rising. It helps to flush out some toxins that during the night have been brought up to the surface. Look for a good source of water - I try to avoid tap water as I find this to be a bit heavy on chlorine and other substances that end up adding more burden to the system. Find a quality bottled water – preferably glass, or add a powerful and effective filter to the tap or even research into a distilled water machine. Our bodies are made of up to 70% of water, and many of us forget that in order for the body to function efficiently it must be properly hydrated. No soft drink will ever hydrate you, in fact they will have the opposite effect. Good quality water will support your overall health like nothing else can. Make sure you drink enough water during the day - separate from the meals - and remember that water is your ultimate detox tool.
2. Cheer up your day with juices
Start your day with colourful foods. The more colourful and varied, the more healthy and powerful they are going to be. Vivid colours reflect the antioxidant power of the food. It carries not only bio-available nutrients but also life force. A good way of having good amounts of your daily dose of goodness is by having a freshly made juice, this is a true elixir of life. It will enrich your body tissues and will feed you at a deep level helping to activate your whole system almost instantly. There is no better way to detox your body and nourish it than preparing a juice made out of fruits and veggies. Powerful foods for your juices include: cucumber, apples, lemon, celery, beetroot, carrots, spinach, parsley, broccoli, ginger...etc But feel free to experiment and use those foods that you feel attracted to. Some people get confused with this so remember that a juice will separate the liquid from the fibre and for that you have to use a juicer (not a blender). 3. Put on your skin only what you would put in your mouth
We could not talk about “detox” without mentioning that everything we normally put on the skin has an impact in the natural balance of the body. And that basically means throwing something into the very core of our central operational system; The endocrine system. The amount of chemicals you place on your skin will interfere with your overall health and well being. Think of it like this: when you put shampoo or conditioner into your hair, the twenty blood vessels, 50 sweat glands, and 1,000 nerve endings soak in the toxins. And some studies suggest skin can sometimes absorb more than your digestive tract. So make yourself a goal and check every label and question everything before putting it in your precious body. When you buy from your local farmer you will get foods that have been grown within an area of around 100 miles from where you live. This will provide you not only with a much more fresh and clean food source but also they will be better handled - instead of foods that have travelled from other countries, which have been handled many times and collected before ripened. Foods from sustainable and ecologically local sources usually will have less or no chemicals, helping to lessen the risk of the detrimental effects of chemicals used in the conventional farming - which sometimes are sprayed with dozens of pesticides and chemicals. Local food also involves production methods that are much more healthy to the environment, humane to animals and will have a better impact on the air and water quality.
5. Get into manual and holistic therapies
This is my favourite part. I could not stress enough how this rocked my world. I have a whole repertoire of manual therapies I use in my life but here I will mention my favourite one.
Enemas - this is one of the most ancient holistic practices use by mankind. It has been called "one of the oldest medical procedures still in use today". An Enema is a fluid injected into the rectum for the purpose of clearing out the bowel. Enemas flush out the rectum and a small part of the descending colon. And Colonics are distinguished from enemas in that they are not self-administered, but instead are administered by a person with some professional training, and they are administered using some type of device to control the water flow. A Colonic, also called colon hydrotherapy or colon irrigation refers to the process of cleansing the entire length of the colon in a continuous flow. In the 1900s, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, treated thousands of people for a variety of ailments and he reported that in over 40,000 cases he had only used surgery in 20 occasions to treat some gastrointestinal diseases. He stated that this success was the result of a balanced diet, exercise and colon cleansing. He also maintained that 90% of the diseases of our civilization are due to an improperly functioning colon. Dr Norman Walker say; “The very best of diets can be no better than the very worst, if the sewage system of the colon is clogged with a collection of waste and corruption."
6. Fill your fridge and kitchen covers with wholesomeness
This is one of the most important parts to get into permanent healthy living and not just a temporary change. The key to manifest a healthy and clean body lies in having an array of wholesome choices available. Bring into your kitchen, colours and a multitude of daily choices to stimulate the change to this lifestyle. There is always a healthy and yummy option available for every unhealthy one. So don't worry if you think you cant give up on something. Find the way. Make sure you have always have a bowl with colourful fruits and a fridge packed with yummy veggies like cucumbers, spinach, kale, sprouts, courgettes, carrots, beetroot. Have in your cupboards wholesome grains, nuts and seeds, like brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds. Find out how you can make delicious drinks using almonds, dates, and some fresh fruits or superfoods (like goji berries, pure cacao or hemp), use good quality oil instead and use only pure sea salt instead of the processed table salt version. These are foods that will fill you with nutrients helping you to stay away from unhealthy cravings. Stay away from canned foods and “sugar free or gluten free” products as they are nothing but another version of processed foods completely depleted from wholesomeness. Go the whole way, go wholesome! There are thousands of online websites with recipes and tips to help you and show you ways to keep this up and up. Self educate yourself constantly. Remember that this is a never ending journey. Keep trying new recipes, new options and never give up.
7. Visit places that offer healthy options
This way of life is absolutely booming, people around the world are making big changes. There has never been so much information and support to make a change to a healthy living like there is today. There are healthy, vegetarian, vegan, raw, macrobiotic options on the rise everywhere. Look up on the web what is around your area and go visit a restaurant, assist in an event or go to a retreat. The more you can soak this way of life up, the more you will breathe it and make it your own. I have lost count on how many people I know who have quit their jobs, changed their whole life after discovering what this lifestyle is all about. And the best way to discover it is by visiting places and hanging out with those who live this way. Not only I have seen people getting younger and feeling happier as they ever have, but I have also witnessed many people getting cured of diseases by living this way. It is beautiful and inspiring.
8. Connect with nature
Nothing can be more rewarding than the energy found in nature. You can literally change your mood in nanoseconds when you are surrounded by nature, and in essence that is what we are. We are nature. We are nothing by it and in today's modern world sometimes can be difficult to find a way out of buildings and computers. I beg you; find a way! Once you do that your body will say ; THANK YOU! Going to nature is more than just breathing more oxygen but is bathing yourself with free electrons, negative ions and light particles that nourish us deeper than we can rationally discerned. This is why we can change our mood almost instantly when we are surrounded by trees. Never underestimate nature because this is all we are and without nature we can't be happy, it is impossible to feel good with ourselves without having that connection. Have you ever wondered why so many people are unhappy? Well have no doubt that lack of nature connection it is one of the reasons why people can't feel completely happy. As it is the source of everything we could ever be. Walking barefoot in nature has been recently discovered scientifically to be key to real lasting health as it allow the body to get rid of electromagnetic charges and balance our natural cyrcadian rhytms. 9. Move your body and exercise
Of course exercise is one of the most powerful things you could ever do. Exercise combined with a good lifestyle is super good. I am a big proponent of yoga as this was the practice that changed my whole life. I was depressed, unhappy and had terrible panic attacks that disappear completely after following a daily routine of yoga and healthy lifestyle. Move your body means letting go of the blocks and let the energy move freely upwards and downwards. We can't bring real flow into our lives unless we move our bodies. One thing you will notice when you move your body daily is more ideas, creativity, inspiration and higher self stem. My favourite exercise is a walk in the park or woods, breathing pure air and doing yoga early mornings.
10. Be gentle to yourself
Be gentle to yourself. You are beautiful and for many years we been told we have to be someone else to be important. What a silly thing to do! To try to be someone when we can be ourselves? So do not hurry, start slowly to know what your own needs are, learn about yourself. We have also been led to believe that we need to listen to experts and doctors when many times they look unhealthy and unhappy. Listen to yourself first, be gentle to yourself and love yourself. Sounds ridiculous to love one self, right? Well at least it sounds a bit girly for me to say it but believe me nothing can be more rewarding than to look one self in the mirror and say “I love you! Give yourself the chance to be rediscovered. Learn what your real self wants and be gentle. No pressure. Start slowly to listen to your body and introduce this amazing way of life that naturally will bring out the best of you and will get rid of all the old unhealthy patterns.
