New Sustainability Awards For Golf Tourism Industry
This announcement comes less than a year on since IAGTO and the Golf Environment Organization (GEO) unveiled their new strategic partnership at the 2012 International Golf Travel Market (IGTM). The 14th IAGTO Awards which will take place on the final night of the IGTM on 14 November 2013 at the historic Tarragona Placa De Tores, Tarragona, in Costa Daurada, Spain.
Since their debut in 2000, the IAGTO Awards have become widely recognised as the “Oscars” of the global golf tourism industry, rewarding the best-performing golf destinations and golf resorts worldwide. This year, the gala event staged in front of an audience of 1,000 golf tourism professionals from more than 60 countries will begin with three Sustainability Awards for:
- Nature Conservation
- Efficient use of Resources
- Community Engagement
An overall winner will then be announced for a golf course that has demonstrated excellence in sustainability across the board.
IAGTO chief executive, Peter Walton, said: “Our GEO-partnered Sustainability Awards represent such an important development for IAGTO because it allows us, for the first time, both to celebrate the outstanding achievements that so many of our member golf courses have made in terms of environmental sustainability and social responsibility and to encourage every tourism-related course to do even more.”
Jonathan Smith, chief executive of the Golf Environment Organization, said: “The results of our collaboration with IAGTO are already tangible, even within the span of 12 short months. Sixty IAGTO golf courses have participated in our OnCourse™programme this year which provides them with support and expertise to record and develop sustainability at all levels.
“We were hugely impressed by the myriad efforts that IAGTO courses have been undertaking to look after the environment and engage with their local communities. These awards highlight some of the most significant achievements, and showcase a much wider commitment and contribution across the industry. We look forward to working closely with IAGTO and members to bring sustainability right to the heart of the future profitability and image of golf tourism in the future.”
Short-listed nominees will be announced during IAGTO’s State of the Market Opening Address at IGTM on 12th November. The winners of the first IAGTO Sustainability Awards in association with GEO will be announced at the IAGTO Awards sponsored by Etihad Airways on 14th November.
